Noten embedded a nineteenth-century pistol in a block of acrylate that he then milled, filed, sanded and polished by hand until the old pistol was encased in the form of a contemporary handgun, as if we were witnessing one in a long series of reincarnations. This is the only piece in Noten’s oeuvre in which the outer layer of acrylic was so distinctly sculpted into a new form.
